Calahonda (also known as Sitio de Calahonda) is a relatively new area of the Costa del Sol situated around 30kms west of Malaga. The area is on the coast and most Calahonda long term rentals are within a very short walk of the beach. Nestled around halfway between Fuengirola and Marbella, Calahonda is popular with tourists as it is a coastal location with very few high-rise apartments. Instead you are most likely to find beautiful little townhouses or apartments in small and friendly blocks. Although the area of Calahonda has seen a lot of development in recent years, the addition of many apartments, townhouses and villas has not spoilt it's beauty. Due to being relatively small in size, compared to it's closest neighbour La Cala de Mijas, heading away from the beach will bring you to the beautiful Spanish countryside, known as the 'campo', in a very short time.
Things to do in Calahonda
Like most Spanish holiday towns, Calahonda has lots to offer for tourists thinking of renting a holiday apartment or villa, or even those looking to live in the area and renting an apartment long term. Calahonda has a wide range of different shops, shopping centres, bars, pubs, cafes, discos, internet cafes, restaurants and bistros, suitable for all ages and tastes.
For those who prefer to remain active there are a number of different activities within close range of Calahonda such as horse riding, mountiain biking, 4-wheel drive trekking, water sports and much more.
Getting to Calahonda
If you, like most people who visit Calahonda on holidays, are arriving from Malaga airport there are a number of ways of getting to Calahonda. Catching a taxi from the airport is by far the easiest method, however if you are thinking of hiring a car for your holiday then there are 2 ways you can drive to Calahonda from Malaga airport.
The first way is to get on the A7 towards Marbella and follow along until close to Fuengirola where you will need to make a choice between the AP7 and the A7 roads. The difference here is the AP7 is a toll road and you will be charged to use this road (only one toll station between the airport and Calahonda) however the road is much better and much quieter than the A7. If you take the toll road you can simply continue until you see the exit sign for Calahonda (it's around 10-15 minutes from the beginning of the toll road). Once you have exited the toll road you will come to a roundabout where you can take the left exit and follow the road down until you come to the Calahonda roundabout.
If you wish to take the A7 (the free road), then exit right onto the A7 where the road splits between AP7 and A7 and continue for around 15-20 minutes past Fuengirola, El Faro and Riviera until you reach Calahonda. This exit will leave you at the Calahonda roundabout, which is located at the bottom of the 'Calahonda Strip' as it is affectionately known locally.

Sitio de Calahonda is now the largest urbanisation from Marbella to Fuengirola boasting a massive 60,000 square metres and attracting a thriving community of both holiday makers and expats of many different nationalities (particularly the English).
Easy access can be made to Sitio de Calahonda from Malaga International Airport via a short 30 min drive along the N340 motorway. Situated 20 minutes from both Marbella and Fuengirola, pretty much everywhere along the Costa del Sol is within easy distance from Calahonda, by either car bus or taxi.
You can find every variety of property in Sitio de Calahonda, from fabulous Spanish villas to trendy studio flats.
In “bajo de Calahonda” (the bottom of Calahonda) there are many beautiful villas, and because José Orbaneja (the owner of the original estates that formed the town), kept strict guidelines on plots sizes, green areas and the building of apartments, bajo de Calahonda mainly consists of large villas and townhouses, with enough space for four golf courses and contains just about every amenity you can think of.
“Alta de Calahonda” (the top of Calahonda) boasts some of the most spectacular views on the coast enjoying the fabulous Costa del Sol coast line, golf views and with a clear day (which is most days!) you can see as far as Gibraltar and Africa.
There are many sports and leisure facilities in Calahonda, amongst a number of gyms and parks, there is also a 9 hole, par 3 golf course opposite the Club del Sol; a large sports centre with a gym, Sauna, Jacuzzi, twelve tennis courts, two squash courts, four paddle courts, a crèche and a kids club. The club provides personal trainers and tuition, for all ages and skill levels, and can also provide you the opportunity to meet new friends and opponents of all levels on selected nights during the week.
Next door to the Club del Sol, is a private international School as well as a huge choice of international, bi-lingual and Spanish schools very close by. Equally, there is a wide choice of private healthcare clinics in and around Calahonda, with a “Social” doctor (the Spanish equivalent of the NHS doctors) in nearby La Cala de Mijas, a short 5 minute drive, and a public hospital – the Costa del Sol, is just 15 minutes away, and will always have a team of interpreters on duty. Calahonda itself has 3 private healthcare clinics that are available 24 hours a day along with a chemist, and a 24 hour chemist a five minute drive towards Marbella, just off the N340 next to El Chaperral.
Los Olivos, one of three commercial centres in Calahonda, has just been built and includes the largest of the three Supersols in Calahonda. El Zoco, the largest commercial center in Sitio de Calaonda proves to be extremely popular with both locals and tourists because of the massive choice of shops, cafes, bars, clubs and different restaurants within it. Close by there is also a Mercadona, a tobacconist, a foreign exchange shop, car hire, Irish butchers, tour operator, flower shop...you name it and Calahonda probably has it!
