Many apartments, townhouses and even villas on the Costa del Sol in Spain are organised and group in small (or sometimes large) urbanisations, which are small communities, often gated with an on-site security guard. Living in an urbanisation offers many benefits over a standalone dwelling, such as security, shared gardens maintained by a gardener, postal distribution etc.

One of the downsides to living in an urbanisation can be the community fees, which vary from urbanisation to urbanisation. These community fees help pay for the upkeep of the urbanisation such as the gardens, the security, infrastructure, maintenance etc. These fees are usually mandatory for a community and are generally controlled the presidente (president) of the urbanisation. The presidente is usually elected for a period of time and always lives in the urbanisation. More often than not a stipulation of being president is that they must own a property in the community rather than rent it.
